Trying on Some Skis at Stowe..
|

<<< As Somebodyisfromhere.com laid in the snow slightly downhill, a woman made the man
she was with retrieve his ski pole that he'd lost mid fall. The man gave him the pole and asked,
"Having fun yet?"
Deflated, and clearly lying, Somebodyisfromhere.com said "Yeah, fun."
Without skipping a beat the man said, "That's what they tell me. They say the same thing about golf."
Somebodyisfromhere.com had thought about golf a bit earlier. Don't lie to yourself, these are
monied activities. He spent $71 for the right to touch the slopes and another $36 to rent the skis.
Like golf, the activity is straightforward, but you have to be willing to pay to start up largely for
equipment.
It also explains why at 27 years old this was his first time on the slopes, or rather, the hill.
He'd been pretty adept at avoiding it, actually. When studying abroad, he had been to the Alps, but
it was offseason. He also had a wedding in Tahoe. Mercifully, that too was in the offseason.
The same went for his trip to Burlington. Somebodyisfromhere.com was comfortable with a view of
Lake Champlain and some craft brews. That is until a car load was headed towards Stowe and an
offer of an early birthday present for the lift fee.
Somebodyisfromhere.com still didn't really want to, but that annoying little voice in his head pulled
the whole "You'll regret not going" card.
That was enough.
And it sucked.
Somebodyisfromhere.com doesn't trust ski lifts much. He don't feel obligated to explain this. They
are essentially chairs held by wire. If that weren't bad enough, they occasionally stop.
It took him to the top. He got off without falling. Made it about 10 yards without falling. Then managed to fall every 5 feet all the way down the beginner slope.
Anybody who has been on skis knows the feeling. You spend so much time in the snow. Getting up isn't easy either, usually you attempt to stand up but just
ending up back on the ground often times while doing a cartoonish split. Eventually, you give up, and take a second to regroup, and then you notice 7 year
olds race past you at an alarming rate.
There's a line in that Ryan Reynolds movie, "Are you kidding? You're Chris Brander. You're Hollywood; you date models. He's Jersey; he skis in his jeans."
Wouldn't you know it, representing the Garden State and with no intention of skiing, Somebodyisfromhere.com had no choice but to ski in jeans, a
windbreaker, and summer sunglasses. It was cold.
By the time he had made it down, his sister in laws had made two trips. His jean cladded first-timer of a brother was waiting for me. He told them he'd sit out a
trip. They went up. They came down with aplomb. The girls moved on to a more difficult course and he and his brother went back up.
Then a funny thing happened. The lift was less scary. It undoubtedly still stunk. This time, though, it stunk on his feet. He made three more trips without
falling. It was fun. The afternoon session was ending and he, sorta, didn't even want it to.
By the final time he had gone up, the slope was emptying out. It was beautiful. Stowe Mountain has high-end houses that overlook the mountain lining the
first time slope. Everything looked terrific.
Across from the beginner slope was another mountain. The real mountain. Gray clouds obstructed the peak. Everybody knows that a majority of an ice berg
sits imposingly beneath the water. Inversely, at Stowe the clouds only hinted at the imposing rock behind it always suggesting a staggering behemoth above
whispering, "you ain't seen nothin' yet."
Somebodyisfromhere.com had kind of got sucked up in the moment forgetting to be cold until he stopped moving and made it inside. There he was greeted
with $9 soup in the second floor cafeteria. In a corner of the room, there also is a bar overlooking the slopes with a band playing music. Downstairs, the gift
shop sells $20 shirts which doesn't seem so bad when compared to the food.
Stowe is often considered one of the best ski resorts on the East. A neighboring building has a classier, less ski-wear appropriate bar. Construction looks to
double the size of the resort.
Room prices appear to be astronomical and may come with caveats on short notice such as needing to rent a 3 bedroom cabin for the weekend of March
5th according to their site. The cheapest room for Friday, April 2nd would be $359. Arbitrarily, the same room would go for $299 on Friday, June 4th.
There are also lodges in town.
