Is  it  Time  to  Take  the  Horse (racing)  out  to  Pasture?
<<< Some might say horse racing is on the decline, but on fan appreciation day,
the people's eyes were glued to the tracks.

One shouldn't need too much convincing to get talked into the combination of sun,
suds, and gambling. At the track they all feed into each other. In fact, the 20
minutes in between races kind of serves as a drinking timer.

It was
Somebodyisfromhere.com's first day at a track in years and he wasn't sure
what to expect

Things got off to a remarkably good start when
he learned that at Monmouth Park
that parking is (always) free and that (due to fan appreciation day) admission was
free as well. Tickets are usually $2.
Opened since the forties, Monmouth is the home of the Breeders Cup, a
two day spectacle with over $26 million in awards this year.

This isn't about Monmouth though, this is about racing.
Somebodyisfromhere.com had previously thought it was for old guys like
Carl Reiner in Oceans 11 and there certainly is an aged contingent
circling the grounds with the smell of cigar smoke following them.
Primarily though, it serves as a place to use obscure
Seinfeld references. Where else can you say, "His
father was mudder, his mother was a mudder"?

In between such antics, there's plenty to do at the
tracks. The price of admission, is well, worth the
price of admission. The grounds offer a park-like
feel where one can get a tan while sitting at a picnic
table or on the grass.

They even let you bring your own alcohol and food if
you choose. They know their bread is buttered with
the bets so why penalize people by price gauging.
This alcohol you may or may not bring can be
carried nearly everywhere. They also sell plenty of
beer.
In the end, it's about the ponies. The old men like the timeless art that comes with their motion. As such, It should be no surprise that the horse was
one of the
early fascinations in photography.

The children like their basic animal innocence.

Everybody else sees them as something different. Perhaps just something else worthy of sharing the sun with you on a nice day. Perhaps it's just
an excuse to make more money.

Whatever it is, it's hard to not enjoy it.
