Of course the area is priced accordingly. An average tasting burger will cost $15 at Mickey Mantle's Restaurant.
Meanwhile, parking in a lot for about 3 hours on a Thursday afternoon dented our wallets to a tune of $52.
The park, though, is free.
One of the early designers of the park was Frederick Law Olmsted the same landscape architect who left his indelible
fingerprints on the park around the United States Capitol and The Chicago’s World Fair (this is the first time I was able to
use this information in conversation and I suspect you already find me smarter). I learned this deliciously dorky tidbit
while reading “Devil in the White City.” The fascinating book is not only about Olmsted, but about a Chicago serial killer
at the same time Olmsted and others were planning the fair. This is me digressing.
There is a nook in the park that is known as Strawberry Fields. Nestled inside Central Park, it's located near the
apartment where John Lennon lived. It's a simple memorial with but one word "imagine" and two colors.
Strawberry Fields is a quiet zone that according to www.centralpark.org has "...a bronze plaque that lists the 121
countries endorsing Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace."
In this day and age, a Garden of Peace might be a little idealistic. Then again so was the musician. As we left the park
prematurely due to weather we saw people of all races and differing accents. We didn't get far before the sky opened.
I have always had the unspoken
understanding that Central Park is
beautiful. I’m not going to lie though,
there’s also a part of me that thinks it
exists primarily as a location for dead
bodies to be discovered in Law &
Order episodes.
Central Park, presumably named after
the coffee shop in Friends, was
picturesque on Thursday (July 19th)
even in between rain showers.
Open until 1 a.m., Central Park covers
6% percent of Manhattan. As such it's
not only a tourist destination, it's near
tourist destinations. Some of its
famous neighbors are tourist
strongholds The Plaza and F.A.O.
Schwartz. Inside the park, Tavern on
the Green's elegance is worth
checking out.
A Walk in the Park.
The rain came down fast and without remorse. Absent
was the supposed New York attitude. People calmly
hid beneath trees for cover. They smiled under their
umbrellas. Ignoring themselves, they laughed at their
wet company. Maybe the peace won't see 121
countries but, on Thursday, it surrounded the park.
And there weren't even any dead bodies.
