Traveling and Soda

Somebodyisfromhere.com doesnt get much more enjoyment out of life than traveling and soda. it's true, as sad as that might be. Well news today is that soda will still be free on USair. Phily.com:

Philadelphia's dominant airline said today that it will no longer charge $2 for sodas, juices, bottled water and coffee.

Starting March 1, the Tempe, Ariz.-based carrier, which shuttles two-thirds of Philadelphia air travelers, will again offer complimentary nonalcoholic beverages.

US Airways became the first and only major carrier last June to charge for soft drinks to offset soaring fuel costs.

Chief executive Doug Parker acknowledged that "being the only large network carrier to charge for drinks put us at a disadvantage."

Oscars

Somebodyisfromhere.com wanted to get this out before the Oscars. Although, he doesn't necessarily care (ok he cares a little) who wins. Heck, they can pick whomever they want. Still, Somebodyisfromhere.com did see all the nominated movies so here are his thoughts.

Slumdog Millionaire. The only movie that Somebdoyisfromhere.com can compare this one to is Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. And it's nothing like that at all. It will change the way you think, however, temporary that may be. Plus it has one of the more quotable AIM profile type quotes in "It is written>" This is Somebodyisfromhere.com's favorite.

Benjamin Button. When Somebodyisfromhere.com left this movie he thought to himselg "how can people say they don't like going to movies" Unique story with a distinct look it was certainly worth seeing. Somebodyisfromhere.com likes Brad Pitt, but his acting didnt leave him with any impression. Ditto for Blanchett. David Fincher directed. Somebodyisfromhere.com thinks Fincher's Zodiac should have won best picture.

Milk. Interesting story. Penn deserves best actor. the trial afterward(not in the movie) was perhaps more interesting.

Frost/Nixon. Great performances by both. Tight story as only a movie based on a play can be.

The Reader. looked like a hammy Oscar type movie with the right pieces in place. Winslet. Fiennes. A director, Stephen Daldry, whose only two movies were nominated (The Hours, Billy Elliot). The movie, using nudity and nazis to movie the story along succeeded when the conclusion was   worthy the sum of the parts.

Sorta Journalism, college basketball style

This one is from the world of college basketball. But to Somebodyisfromhere.com, it's much bigger. I don't like Uconn, or for that matter, thier coach Jim Calhoun. Still this article from ESPN.com talks about an exchange between a freelance jounarlist and the coach about the coach's salary ($1.6 mil) and the state budget problem (in the billions). The journalist asked whether that was money well spent. the coach answered that his team generates $12 million for the school, and by extension, the state.  That's where the story should end which isn't even picking sides. Im sure you can argue both points. At that point, the writer should get more information from other sources and write it up.

Instead he badgers the coach, as if the coach would ever say, "you know what, you're right."

later the article describes the writer:

"Krayeske, of Hartford, is a political activist and self-described freelance journalist who has landed in the headlines after other high-profile incidents in the past.

They included his January 2007 arrest at Gov. M. Jodi Rell's inaugural parade, where Hartford police charged Krayeske with breach of peace and interfering with an officer."

Journalism, even in the era of dying newspapers, can change the world. With words. With questions. But when done shottily, the writer is no better than the person who throws a shoe at a president.

Now, Somebodyisfromhere.com knows he ain't exactly pure journalism, but at least he doesn't try to tell himself he is what he plainly isn't.

A Perfect site

Somebodyisfromhere.com has been meaning to put this together for a little while.  It's the perfect site. No really, it's virtually flawless. It's the better version of his site. You see, it's his normal site, but with beer goggles. Basically, it's what the site would be with an actual budget or some advertisements.

Somebodyisfromhere.com, however, will continue to update his site on a weekly basis.

Town names

So Somebodyisfromhere.com as a travel writer always keeps his eyes out. Weird names are intriguing to him (to an extent). we've all heard of truth or consequences, new mexico for example. At one point, he considered, and he still might, write about towns with the same name as beer (see, corona, ca).

Another oddity is the town named after a full name. no, the last name isn't enough. luckily, all the towns named after george washington didnt take this approach.  But i suppose the most common example is Jim Thorpe (pennsylvania).

Recently, Somebodyisfromhere.com came accross Ben Franklin, Texas so he decided to look it up.  Somebodyisfromhere.com is from the Philadelphia area so he sees his share of Franklin around town. sure he's only the 2nd most pupular ben in the state right now (see super bowl quarterbacks). but, he seems to be a good guy to name a town after. Texas is a weird choice, but what the hell, right?

wrong. wiki describes, "The settlement was located on Benjamin simmon;s land grant and named for his son, Benjamin Franklin simmons. The simmons family, along with the bidwells and hogues(??) arrived in the area in 1835 and were among the first settlers"

The town appears to get more mysterious in a western kind of way.

"In 1895 the Texas-Midland Railroad built through Cooper, the county seat, and drew much of the traffic from Ben Franklin. By 1904 the population had decreased to 343. In 1912 only two businesses remained. Records for 1918 indicated two segregated schools. The town had 300 people and no businesses in 1925.

"However, by 1929 it had had a slight revival with 500 residents and a bank. By 1936 the railway through town had become part of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe system, and the town had seven businesses, a school, three churches, and a population of 300. In 1945 rapidly declining Ben Franklin had 250 residents and seven businesses.

"In 1964 Ben Franklin had a water tank, two churches, two cemeteries, one business, the post office, and 150 inhabitants. Six years later there was a Ben Franklin Community Center. The only business in 1976 was Fremman's Grocery. In 1990 the community had seventy-five residents."

Snowy London

Somebodyisfromhere.com is like many of you who have heard about the particularly cold season in the US. Apparently, London has the same situation.

Backdated blogs

1/31/09 6:08pm: Somebodyisfromhere.com lost his money in Atlantic City.

1/29/09 4:48pm: Somebodyisfromhere.com is heading back to Atlantic City. He probably won't write about it....as he has done so enough already. But here's an article about the impending financial disaster in A.C.

1/28/09 7:35pm: Somebodyisfromhere.com is thinking of going to Florida for Spring Training and has had his eye open about the area lately. Here's an article about Tampa: Road to Super Bowl XLIII flanked by 43 strip clubs.

1/27/09 12:39pm: Is Marisa Tomei a classic actress? she's barely held to that esteem, but she's got a heck of a track record. If there was a hall of fame for actresses would she make the cut?here are her stats:1 oscar.. win3 total.. oscar.. nomin..ation..s rangi..ng over 16 years1 classic seinfeld episode.

1/25/09 515pm: Somebodyisfromhere.com saw Doubt. It's essentially a play so the overall setting isn't interesting enough to put into a conversational travel magazine article. Still, the movie was pretty solid. The performances were especially striking. Along with Frost/Nixon, it goes to show you how honed the writing and performances are when a movie is based on a play.

1/19/09 Somebodyisfromhere.com is depressed that Larry Fitzgerald is the most talented Cardinal since Rod Tidwell.
